Malawians are much better suited to create, own and manage projects in “THEIR” country than are we. While our Peace Corps experience afforded us the opportunity to understand the Malawian culture more thoroughly than most, ours was but a short window into the total picture. History shows that projects come and go…..and when they go, they are gone for good. As a consequence of a funder’s departure, all the good work done is lost…what a tragic outcome! Designing a project that involves Malawians and gives responsibility to Malawians has a better chance of changing the Malawians’ (“their”) future. Our years of work at Malawi Children’s Village (MCV), malawichildrensvillage.org/, taught us to adjust our fundamental orientation, our work at Orphan Support Africa (OSA) was evolutionary in many respects ….we had the idea and the approach that was fine tuned as OSA worked with community groups throughout Malawi. What those groups chose to implement, Village Orphan Care-Africa, when asked, is there with them to help fund their income-generating activity.
There is a business phrase that has great meaning here…”skin in the game” What we are trying to do is show, with VOCA, that if Malawians have skin in the game the project has impetus to succeed and sustain.
